Rain, rain go away

I whined about being in a drought all year - until September, when it started to rain around here.  That is continuing in November I guess.

We did have some really nice days in October, without all the normal wind that usually takes away the beautiful leaves quickly.  But over the past week the rain has moved in again.  I had dumped about 3" total from the rain gauge by Sunday morning.  And then it rained all night Sunday, and more on Monday.  I'm ready for some sunshine!!!

The second version of last week's Blockheads block is done. After finishing this one I'm wishing I had used a warm color where the dark teal is.

The November star block for Garden of Stars was finished yesterday.  And the parts are ready to go for the next 2 alternate blocks.  These are paper pieced 12" finished blocks. Carol Doak always designs blocks that look so intricate and difficult, but she breaks them down into very manageable sections so they are easy to sew.

While watching the Vikings game on Sunday, I just had to experiment a little.  One reader mentioned doing rectangular Churn Dash blocks, so of course I had to follow that squirrel, right?  From the strip bin I began with this one as a sample to check my cutting measurements. It's 6 x 12 finished.

I was going to add Churn Dash blocks to next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  But why wait?  The bin of novelty kid prints is very full, so why not work on a donation quilt with 12" Churn Dash blocks, 6" Churn Dash blocks, and now with 6" x 12" rectangular ones. I've pulled several novelty fabrics and began cutting the parts for Churn Dash - and for Windmills or other RSC blocks based on what was leftover.

Sometimes just cutting up scraps is very satisfying, even if they don't get sewn up the same day.  These will be good Leaders/Enders all week.  Maybe following a squirrel was just I was needing to keep the sewing fresh.

In the meantime, one of my November goals was to donate 2 quilt tops.  I've pulled out 3 child sized flimsies that will be mailed later this week.   When I removed the bright colored Windmill (old UFO) flimsy from the hanger - surprise!!!   Under that one was another Windmill flimsy with all white backgrounds.  The 3rd top is Desert Horses - made a couple of years ago.

There is room in the box for 1 more, so before I seal that box I might choose another one.  These flimsies came off the hangers in the closet in my sewing room - and off the long list of tops waiting to be quilted.  I feel lighter already!

  1. Rain in the Dakotas in November? I remember my first trip to Fargo to interview at FPL -- first weekend of November and they'd had a snowfall. This year has been unusually warm here, too. The geraniums are going strong.
Mixed churn dashes are a great idea for RSC!

  2. Churn Dash blocks in three different size will make a very interesting quilt. Looking forward to see more of it. The Garden of Stars block is a beauty. Enjoy the sewing room while the rain passes. ;^)

  4. What a nice surprise to find another flimsy that fits into your bow to ship and we all like the feeling of lighter with our projects;) With your paper piecing do you put the block all together before taking off the papers?

  6. What? You found another top?!?! Way to whittle down the list by sending them off for donations 😉 So glad you liked the rectangle churn dash idea. They really do make good leader/enders.

  7. What a generous gift. I have not yet achieved the status of a back log of quilts in the closet. That must mean I need to get sewing! LOL.
