Quilts of Valor updates

I mentioned the other day that one of our QOV members arranged a generous donation from Thrivent, and we shopped together for some backings on Monday.  But we still had money left over so we also bought fabric for a non-scrappy quilt using the Split Back Star pattern from the QOV website.

I cut and kitted up the parts for 43 blocks - 20 each for 2 quilts, plus 3 extras.  The instructions are printed, and I made a quick sign up sheet so anyone taking block kits can write down how many they took.  Each little sandwich bag contains the parts for 1 block.

One more block kit has become my sample to show to the group.  This 12.5" (unfinished) block is very forgiving when multiple people are sewing them, as the star floats.  There are lots of different ways to lay these out.

The blocks can be layed out with the reds/blues going diagonally.  Or they can be done like the quilt above.  We awarded this particular scrappy Split Back Star quilt back in November.  It used 20 blocks and has a border like we are planning with these kits.  Because the blocks will read kind of solid we bought a pretty red and blue star print for the borders.

Last month various members took 3 quilt kits to assemble at home, and 2 quilts just needing binding.  This past week one member brought me 2 new quilt tops and 3 pillowcases she had made.  And she said once they're quilted to give them back to her as she has the binding all ready.

We have some awesome QOV members!!!
