RSC24 Week #11

Binding has been happening around here, and it's great to check off 2 UFOs from the list.

Small Hearts was an RSC project over the past 2 years.  The hearts are 4.5" square, except for the one "open" heart.  This is an oversized crib quilt, and should make a good baby gift.  

Scrappiness Is Happiness (Lori Holt book) was a challenge project with our Sew Vintage group last year.  Each of us chose to participate however we chose, or not at all.  I replaced a couple of the blocks from the book and used duplicates of ones the same size.  I think the biggest challenge here was working with such a variety of blocks sizes, and then sashing sizes.  More of my 30s scraps and stash went into this.  The background is scrappy.  And I even did a scrappy binding, using up most of the leftover 30s print binding pieces from the drawer.  This is a big quilt (approx. 82 x 86), and I had a hard time finding a good spot for a photo.  The sun really washes out the colors. In reality it's bright and cheerful because of those 30s prints.

One more RSC quilt is nearly ready to bind, once I get it trimmed.  It has white Ohio Stars.  One of my goals today is to go through the leftover binding strip drawer again, and collect enough to make a scrappy binding.  If there aren't enough leftovers, then I'll dig into the stash to add a few more strips.  

But what about purple sewing this week?  There is a tiny purple finish . . . this birdy mug rug.  I believe this is a Pat Sloan pattern.  Last year I made a baby quilt using the birds and this block was left over.  It's just right for a mug rug at 8.5".

This is the Brighten block.  Each month I've made 2 of them using the RSC color, beginning in 2023.  It's a 10" block, so these will continue to accumulate until there are enough for a decent size quilt.

Night Vision is a block I saw online and just had to add to the RSC collection for this year.  So far I've made 3 green, 3 red, and now this purple one.  I can't stand throwing away triangles trimmed away, so each block ends up with bonus pinwheels to go with it.  This block has a partial seam, but it's quite easy to do since the pieces are fairly big at 3.5" by 6.5".

The parts are all cut for 2 more purple Night Vision blocks.  Hopefully I'll have these sewn over the weekend.  These are 9" finished blocks, so just like the Brighten blocks it will take quite a few to make a useful sized quilt.  There is no rush for these. 

RBD Challenge catch up

Last week I just didn't get around to making the Riley Blake Design challenge block. But I'm all caught up now.  This is block #7 called Star Crossed by Heather Peterson.

 

Block #8 for this week is Glisten by Jill Finley.  We're halfway done with this weekly challenge, as there will be 16 blocks. I might go back to previous years' challenges to choose extra blocks to make because I want this quilt to end up rectangular rather than square.  But we'll see what actually happens by the time I get to that stage.

Getting back to a routine

 It's time to get back to more QUILT-Y topics here.

I took some binding with me to work on in the hotel room, but the only thing that is finished is this little mug rug.  It's 8" square, and made from an orphan block that has been hanging on my bulletin board for over a year.  It was a Pat Sloan pattern that I used for a baby quilt. The baby quilt was made with 30s reproduction prints. This test block used batiks. It's a pattern I know I'll use again because I love how chubby the bird looks.

The other binding is on a big quilt, and I'm halfway around with hand stitching it down.

The championship games were 3:30 and 8:30 on Tuesday so there was a lot of time to do other things before heading to the arena.  Some of our extended family group gathered at a local restaurant for lunch, and guess what was mere steps away?  A brand new quilt shop!!

I just had to stop in to see this new shop, and was not disappointed.  A couple of unique patriotic prints came home with me - with no firm plan yet for them.  But I liked the colors.  And the green plaid is a binding possibility for a current project.  Up in the right corner you can see a black/white/grey layer cake I couldn't resist.  Other than food, these were my only "vacation" purchases. 

The shop name is Jacqueline & Joyce in Sioux Falls.  When I said it was my first visit, they gave me a cute little measuring tape as a welcome gift.  The shop itself is beautiful inside, and the fabrics mostly had a modern vibe.  Isn't it interesting to see what unique styles each quilt shop has?  It's only a couple of blocks from the interstate (I-29 north/south) so if you are passing through the area I recommend visiting.  There are 2 other really nice quilt shops close by as well in Sioux Falls.  And several more located in the small towns along I-29 in both directions.

Home again . . .

 First of all . . . it's good to be home again after a 5 day college basketball "vacation" with extended family.  It's an annual thing - fun of course, but it's still good to be home again.

 And even more important, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to granddaughter Sophia!  She's the taller one on the left with the white Jackrabbit hat.  We took this photo sometime over the weekend, but she did get to skip out of school a little early yesterday and come to the championship games too. She loves watching basketball and had fun hanging out with everyone.

Back to the reason for being gone for 5 days - college basketball.  We are big fans and have season tickets for South Dakota State University basketball.  The past 5 days were the conference tournament. Both teams, men and women, were seeded #1 and managed to win their championships.  The women's team overcame losing 2 starters for the season to major injuries and went undefeated in the Summit League conference. Actually the women haven't lost to a conference team since 2022.  

On to the NCAA tournament now in about a week, although we'll be watching on TV and NOT traveling to where ever those games will be.

As we got home last night a bit after midnight, today will be devoted to laundry, grocery shopping, and just generally getting caught up with real life again.  On a side note - I've been able to read all the blogs I follow (via my phone) while gone, but couldn't comment on any.  

Game day

 

It’s championship game day for both men and women teams for our Jackrabbits. Last night the oldest grandson got to come with his dad to one game. He was even a good sport about sitting with me and the other ladies.

My design wall has a herd of elephants.  As is, this quilt is 58 x 70.  But I keep thinking it needs an outer border.  What do you think?  Border or no border?

Hoping for Spring

Time to remove the winter decor around the house, to encourage Spring to arrive.  Before leaving for the basketball tournament, I did a little switch out.

My mom's treadle machine is a really good spot for some seasonal decor.  

I have 2 favorite Easter table runners that I'll put out later in the month. But in the meantime the wooden bunny family is guarding the dining room table.
