Weekend fun

My current project got moved over the weekend from the cutting table to the ironing board, back to the cutting table, and is now on the floor.  But I had to make room for a very special weekend project - sewing lesson #1 with one of my granddaughters.

Sophia (age 12) came along with me to the guild meeting on Saturday morning, and ended up coming home with a panel she saw on the "giveaway" table.  She has been talking about learning to sew, but finally the time was right and the panel really caught her eye.  We came home and shopped grandma's stash for 2 fabrics to make borders on her panel.

She was very excited to make her very first project - sewing, pressing, and even did some trimming with the rotary cutter.  I tried NOT to hover too much!!  She did a really great job on her very first sewing project ever.

We'll look for something warm and fuzzy for backing, and then do some planning on how to finish it.  And she's already planning to make a pillowcase next time - and even shopped the stash again for just the right fabrics to make it.  She loves sports - and most any kind of arts and crafts, so maybe sewing will be something she develops into a lifelong hobbies.  I'm hopeful.

It was a very busy weekend with lots of other things going on besides the sewing.  While Sophia and I were at the guild meeting, my daughter baked 7 loves of banana bread and made the sloppy joes that I had planned for lunch.  

And she and her dad fixed my antique chair.  My favorite aunt gave me this dainty antique corner chair back in January 1977 when I moved from Minneapolis to Iowa to get married.  It has always been in our bedroom.  The spindles and seat had become very wobbly, and the whole thing had nearly collapsed.  They have it all re-glued and it looks wonderful.  Now - my husband says he needs to remember not to sit in it every time he puts his shoes on.  LOL

Grandpa treated us ALL to a movie in the afternoon, after our sewing lesson.  We went to see Despicable Me 4 - very cute!  Jack picked the movie.  Then I went along with my daughter and the kids to the city aquatic center to swim late afternoon on Saturday.  

And we spent 2 evenings playing board games.  The game is Marbles & Jokers, played with cards, marbles, and wooden boards.  Jack is only 9 but he caught on quickly.  It can be played with 2-6 players, and is fun for any age.   There were also a couple of games of Go Fish!!
