Blue is the biggest scrap bin that I have, and it's always overflowing for some reason. The Quilt of Valor scrap bin is probably the second biggest - and obviously also has a lot of blue in it. I've been working on a scrappy Quilt of Valor again the past couple of months. It's a pattern called Gleam. One more block was added to the stack.
In an effort to do some sorting, I've been separating the light blue scraps from the dark and medium blue scraps in the bin. From the lighter blues, a couple of string blocks were born. These are only 6" finished.
And in an effort to get that Quilt of Valor scrap bin under control - 2 more placemat flimsies are ready to quilt and bind. In that scrap bin were 2 layer cake pieces with the red trucks. They hadn't been used yet because I didn't want to cut them into small pieces for blocks and lose that cute print. So they will now become the first placemats of the new year.
Speaking of QOV scraps, there was the project box still containing the leftover units I had after finishing the RWB Indigo Way (past Bonnie Hunter mystery). Lots and lots of 3.5" leftover units. I need that project box for one of my 2026 projects, so it's time to empty it. There is a lot of blue in this box to play with.
There were enough of these to make another placemat. This unit was originally for the border, but I used a plain border instead. Now they will have a purpose.
These blue and neutral Square-in-a-Square units are also 3.5". About half were sewn, and the other half were just clipped together in the box. Time to turn all of these into a placemat too. That will leave a few more random units, probably destined to become more mug rugs this year.
Let's go see what everyone else is playing with already for 2026 . . .

You have a very pleasing assortment of patriotic fabrics, Sarah and a good start to the new year plans. I enjoy watching your progress every week.
Look at you go to use up those scraps!!!! Nice work on the place mats!
I do love those square in a square blocks. Looks like you are making a big dent in those blue bins already!
LOVE that Gleam block, Sara! I've been seeing that block in other colorways around the internet lately. Good thinking on using your BH leftovers for the placemats you have in the works, too!
Placemats are a great way to use up those orphan blocks! Look at you go! What a great start to the year: cleaning out a project box. I wish.
I love using up leftover blocks and the littlest scraps to make placemats! Those triangle in a square and square in a square blocks are going to be great for that. Love your Gleam blocks, too! Happy making in 2026, Sara!
such pretty projects...have to chuckle as i have loads of blues in all different hues...seem to always gravitate toward them but they never dwindle...LOL
Another post proving that you do not sleep!! Love all the plans and in progress items. Happy New Year!
You've been busy! Pretty blocks and the placemats look great. I do understand why you couldn't cut the red truck! It's a fun print.
Ohhh I really like the Gleam block - that is going to make a fantastic QOV - Love the peek into your scrap bins - have fun playing with them
Those patriotic truck place mats are really cute. You've done a lot to tame your scrap bins. Hopefully you can at least close them now.
Great idea to turn those leftovers into placemats.
I looked up Gleam -- great pattern for QOV and I can imagine it in other colorways. My Indigo Way blocks are still in a box....
Love the Gleam block and the fabulous use of the 2 large-print 10" squares for placemats. I have to admit though that my heart pittered pattered over the red leftover Indigo Way bits into a placemat. Stunnung! Great week, Sara!
