RSC26 - Week #2

Last fall I was going through some old patterns and came across the Snail Trail.  Years ago I made a big quilt as a wedding gift using these blocks. It's time to revisit this one because it's a wonderful option for scrappy.  So I made 2 brown blocks during the month last fall with dark neutrals for RSC. 

I'm currently thinking 2-4 blocks in each color will make a nice big quilt.  I'll need a couple more blue ones, maybe in lighter shades. And maybe more browns. These finish at 11.5" and that one on the left is touch smaller than it should be, as my ruler moved while trimming.  Oops!  But it will work out OK in the end.  

It's easy to get lots of blocks made quickly when I already have them cut out and layed out on one of my design boards.  That is how things went this week.  Two blue Give It a Whirl blocks have been added to the stack of these. I think just a couple in each color this year will take me to a large enough quilt since there are a lot of them already from 2025.

A couple of design boards held parts and pieces for various Quilt of Valor blocks.  Those 2 design boards are now almost empty, and produced one block for each of these 3 block sets that have been on-going for months.  Left to right: 4-Patch Fun, Gleam, and Twin Star.  

Also from those design boards these 6" Churn Dash blocks joined the 5 red ones I already had.  That top red block came from Nann in a box of goodies last month.  My thought is to mix the 6" blocks with 12" Churn Dash blocks in a future QOV.

And finally, there is the Echoes block for QOV.  This 10" block is the 2026 block drive pattern, free to download from the Quilts of Valor web site.  I shared this pattern with our QOV group last weekend, and I think we'll use them around a panel as the pattern suggests.  The blocks for QOV will be scrappy, which of course made me think they would look great in any scrappy color combo.  It's almost identical to one of the Fabric Cafe 3-yard quilts too.  

One new RSC block for my 2026 plan is the Lori Holt block Honey Bee from her book Farm Girl Vintage 2.  Our guild made the 6" version of this block for our past president this fall and those blocks were really adorable.  My assigned color for the bee body was red for the president's block.

I decided to make the 12" version this year for RSC, and turn them into a baby quilt.  The block on the left is my first attempt. I'll readily admit that I was quite underwhelmed by my fabric choices. The pattern shows grey or maybe black wings.  I should have paid attention.  It took me about 20 minutes to make 2 grey wing units, pick out the seams around the blue ones, and sew the grey ones into the block.  Huge improvement in my humble opinion.  The pieces are cut to make another blue Bee, in lighter blue - with grey wings. 

Let's go see what everyone else is playing with already for 2026 . . .
