RSC15 rows are done

Sunday morning sewing gave me a chance to finish the last RSC15 block and then sew the blocks into rows.  I'm hoping these rows will become a finished flimsy in the next few days.  Here is the final block - with the unusual name of Swamp Angel Star. I'm not sure where that name originated but the block is great.

I'm connecting to http://www.patchworktimes.com for Design Wall Monday. Check out what other quilters are working on this week.

RSC15 progress - Ohio Star

Only 1 more RSC15 Sampler block to go now that I've finished #24. This is the Ohio Star.

The last color is lime green and there are 2 star blocks and 3 alternate blocks in that row, plus 2 yellow blocks on the ends.

The yellow blocks are done, and I finished up 1 of the 3 alternate blocks along with the Ohio Star. The other 2 alternate blocks are partially done and just waiting for the green sections.

I have a goal to have this quilt top complete by the end of the month.

RSC15 Sampler is taking shape

My orange blocks are done and the orange row as well.  So 4 rows are completely set together and it appears that we have 4 more star blocks to make. And there are 8 more alternate blocks although most of those are partially made already. Only two more colors to add!!

Check out the RSC15 project on http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/. I am absolutely loving this sampler and am so glad I decided to sew along instead of just making my own rainbow blocks like last year. Of course I really liked my quilt from last year, but I'm a sucker for samplers so this has been tons of fun.

Design Wall Monday - RSC15 updates

One more RSC15 block is made. This one is called Twirling 9 Patch. It went together so fast.

This weekend we got a glimpse on Facebook of this quilt as it will look all finished and I'm even more excited about this one. Looks like the last 2 months' colors will be brown and a light green/mint green. And there is one more orange block I think.

Go to Patchwork Times to see what is on everyone else's Design Wall Monday.

RSC15 Whirler

This is sampler block #19 and it's called Whirler. I used 3 different orange fabrics in this one.

We can really imagine how this quilt will look now that we are into month 9. And I'm loving it.

Accuracy is important

This Rainbow Scrap Challenge block is called Bulls-eye and I'm not completely happy with it. However it is NOT going to be redone.

The problem was that I cut the center blue square 1/2" too small, then all of the next rounds were all too long. So - while being brainless on Sunday afternoon - I trimmed the long strips rather than question why they were too long. What a rookie mistake!!

So the result was that the center was only 6", rather than 6.5". I finally decided to just add a narrow background piece to fill it out and it turned out OK - not great, but I can live with it.

One more indigo block to make and I'll be caught up again.

RSC15 block in indigo

This month's color is indigo or we can choose to substitute a dark purple or black if we prefer. I decided I didn't want to use black but didn't have much for dark blue in my stash. Or dark purple either.

This block center is Mr Roosevelt's Necktie and I did find some dark blue for this. But over my lunch hour today I stopped at my local quilt shop and picked up a couple more options to use in the next couple of blocks. I think it looks like there are 3 indigo blocks although only 2 have been posted so far. Maybe I'll get that other block made tonight after work. And I guess I need to add another 1 yard to my stash status.

Catching up with RSC15

Sunday was a great relaxing day. Breakfast on the deck with the Sunday paper, and then lots of sewing time with no interruptions, because my husband was playing in a golf tournament.  I put together several of the alternate blocks and sections for more alternate blocks. Then I laid them all out on the floor to get the big picture.  I am loving this sampler quilt.  We have a few more colors to add yet and I think brown or orange are 2 of the ones coming up yet.

Getting organized

No actual sewing occured this morning but I did spend some time organizing the pieces for some of the alternate blocks that I'll need for the RSC15 sampler quilt.

The afternoon will be spent celebrating with family as my brother-in-law gets married.  Tomorrow however, I plan to sew some of these sections together.

Another red block

Another block is finished for my RSC15 sampler.  July's color is red and it's my very favorite.  I cut the red and white squares needed for the alternate blocks too, so those are ready to sew into 4-patches.

No sewing happening this weekend though as we're spending some time with grand-kids, going to a wedding, playing a little golf, and (hopefully) stopping in a couple of quilt shops in the Black Hills.

Design Wall Monday - RSC15 block #14

Lantern - that is the block name for the 14th RSC15 sampler block.  This one was so easy and I just love the look.

Check out the Rainbow Scrap Challenge online at: http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/  This has been a really fun project this year. Last year I just did my own thing each month with the selected color of the month. And I made a large quilt from my pigtail blocks. But this year I'm making her sampler blocks each month. Plus I've done a bit of sewing on UFO items with that color each month.

HMMM - since this month is red maybe I need to see what I have in the UFO pile that has red. There should be LOTS of choices as red is my favorite color.

RSC15 block 11

The 11th block in RSC15 is the churn dash and it is done.

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for June is going to be light blue which is a color that was a bit sparse in my stash. I picked up several light blue fat quarters yesterday while on a museum, lunch, shopping trip with some friends.  I just needed an excuse for more stash enhancement, right?

RSC15 turns green in May

Green is the new color for RSC15 and I made my first green block this morning. It's the Sawtooth Star, which is what each of these 6.5" centers are actually set INTO. So this one is a star-in-a-star. This was block number 9 and I have to say they are looking great together. I can't wait to start making the alternate blocks in between these.

Check out what other quilters are doing for RSC15 this week: http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/

And I need to find some other green UFO projects to work on the rest of the month of May. Wonder what I'll find.

RSC15 Broken Sugar Bowl

The most recent RSC15 Sampler block is Broken Sugar Bowl. I used a much lighter group of purple fabrics for this one but I think the contrast with the first block will be good.

Since it is early in the month and we've already done 2 purple blocks I'm wondering if there will be a 3rd purple one. We did 2 blue, 2 pink, and 2 yellow in previous months so there are 8 blocks done. And I can't wait to begin adding the alternate chain blocks in between these. Loving her sample quilt design.

Check out the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2015 site.

RSC15 block #7

Block #7 in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sawtooth Sampler is Carrie Nation and yes - this center section is only 6.5" square. That means those dark purple sections finished at 3/4".

This might actually be my favorite block so far. I just love the looks of those little 4-patch blocks marching through it.  Each of the 6.5" center blocks is set into a Sawtooth Star setting to make a 12.5" block.

RSC15 goes yellow

Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC15) for this month is focusing on yellow. Block #5 is called Air Castles and it is basically a Card Trick block but with a solid center.  Isn't is amazing how one small change makes a whole new look?

So far I'm keeping up with these blocks. Five complete and 19 to go, plus the alternate blocks which are a chain that will run diagonally between these.  Fun, fun, fun!

RSC15 block 2

The second sampler block for RSC15 (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) has a Card Trick block is the center of the star.  The centers of these sampler blocks are all 6.5" unfinished and I think they will probably be mostly traditional block patterns which I really like.

Blue is a color that I use a lot so there were quite a few choices in my stash.

Now I need to get back to work on the blue Trip Around the World blocks.  Some evening sewing planned this week should give me a chance to finish at least a couple more of them.

RSC15 has begun

I really enjoy getting involved in some online communities to see what other quilters are working on, and also to "play" along with some of the online projects.

So I'm joining in on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge again this year and am looking forward (RSC15) to playing along with http://superscrappy.blogspot.com. The whole idea is that we are challenged each month use up our scraps to make something - anything - using the color of the month. January 2015 is blue.

The host of RSC15 has also designed a sampler quilt for the year that will incorporate a whole lot of 6.5" blocks framed by a sawtooth star.  And I'm going to work on the sampler as well as other projects of my own.  She plans to post 2 or 3 block tutorials each month for this sampler.

Sampler block #1 is called Whirling Geese and used the partial seam technique to make those flying geese whirl around the center. And the host has a great tutorial full of pictures of every step.  I used some blue batik scraps and a white background, but I haven't really decided yet whether or not I'll stick with batiks or use up other blue scraps. The background - I think that will be scrappy too, using whites, creams, shirtings, etc. We'll see how it shakes out.
