Design Wall Monday - Layout options

I'm torn between setting the Crown of Thorns blocks on-point or straight, but right now I'm leaning toward the on-point layout.  Or I could split the blocks and make 2 baby quilts on-point.



No matter which layout I choose, I'll need a few more blocks.  These blocks are my RSC16 (rainbow scrap challenge) project this year. Orange and yellow are the colors for this month and each month has had a main color and an accent. I think I'm all caught up, but I definitely need a few more blocks for size and layout purposes.

RSC16 update

 

The colors for September for RSC16 are rose garden hues - reds with a touch of gold. My favorite color of rose is red so I chose a deep red for this month's Crown of Thorns block. I have some gold scraps left over from Allietare, so a gold block is yet to come. And I still plan to make a light pink one to fit with one of the previous months' colors.

 

Counting the red block there are now 12 of these so I've reached that point where there are nearly enough for a whole quilt.  Since these are 16" blocks, having enough for a quilt top doesn't take long.

A pink Crown of Thorns

Crown of Thorns block number 6 is bubblegum pink. Maybe the grey one will be next.  

My quilt inspector was busy napping on Sunday afternoon instead of helping when I took this photo. He didn't even come down to my sewing room to check on me. And he was a bit grumpy when I decided it was time to share his sofa space with him.  It's not like I asked him to move over. But who argues with a 20 pound cat? It's his house - we just pay the mortgage.

More blocks

Two more Crown of Thorns blocks joined that lonely yellow one last night. Plus I have a purple one cut out and ready to go. And a green fabric pulled from the scrap bin for another. These blocks are 15" square so they should add up quickly to make a top large enough for a bed.

These are going to be part of my RSC16 fun this year. Blue was the January color, with a touch of purple. Purple was the March color with hints of yellow, so those will be caught up once I get that purple block done. Orange is this month's color with black, but I have a dark grey that I think I'll use instead.  And I still need to dig into my scraps to find a brown and a pink for February. Green hasn't actually been used yet, but it jumped out of the scrap bin at me, so it's in the mix.

Crown of Thorns

Last week I made this 15" Crown of Thorns block just for fun. And I've decided that I like it so much that I pulled the previous month's colors (RSC16) and am considering making these as another Rainbow Scrap Challenge project.  I could do both the main color and the accent color for 2 blocks per month.

I haven't put much of a dent in my scraps yet so I have lots of fabric to choose from.  No progress will be made today because I headed to Saturday Sampler and then to my twin grandchildrens' 3rd birthday party. But I think these blocks will be a project for next week.

An attitude adjustment

I took the morning off today . . . call it a mental health day. Unfortunately I do have to work this afternoon.  Some work frustrations are getting the better of me lately, so I need an attitude adjustment desperately.

But I refreshed my creative energy a bit this morning by making one more Twinkle Star and cutting out all of the pieces for the last 4. That will give me 8 of them for the RSC16 column quilt. I also made a few more units for the mystery quilt.

This month's color is blue with an optional touch of purple. I can't quite decide if today's block has too much purple or not. But, I'm keeping it because it is pretty. The star points and corners are a dark blue and purple batik. And like always with a batik the color can look so different in different sections.

My first block didn't have any purple and I have one more ready that will be only blue. And I guess if this column (vertical row) reads mostly blue from a distance, then it will be fine.

Twinkle Star #3

One more of these cute little 9" blocks for RSC16 is ready to add to the column.

This one was made during my lunch break which proves they are quick and easy to do. I think I was calling it a twisted star in an earlier post but the name is Twinkle Star.

The dark star points and corners are actually a dark purple but they look dark blue in my photo. I need to lay these out in some good light instead of the lamp and the grey, dreary natural light in the house.

It has a friend . . .

My twisted star block for RSC16 has a friend now. I made a second block and this one is also completely made from scraps.

The color for January is blue with a touch of purple as an accent if we want. My first block was all blue, but this new one does have a touch of purple added. And I like that little surprise.

I have a lot of blue scraps and purple scraps so these should be pretty easy to do although I haven't decided yet how many I will do. The instructions show sizes using 6 or 8 blocks so we'll see what I decide. This is a quick block to make and ends up 9 inches.
