Blog frustrations

I don't understand why people feel they have the right to interfere with simple pleasures of others.

My blog is really just my quilting journal, for my enjoyment and as a means to interact with other quilters.  But lately I've had more and more "scam" comments, plus I've noticed that new followers are definitely NOT quilt enthusiasts.  I probably can't do anything about the followers - YET - but I've taken steps to cut down on the scam comment posts.

Almost every night for the past week I get 6-8 comments posted on OLD blog posts - usually going back years - like they are trying to hide them.  Which is probably exactly why they put them on old posts. The comments vary in language, with English, French, German and other languages I don't recognize.  Always advertising something like Gucci bags or Rolex watches or some kind of designer shoes.  The content of each comment is identical (copy/paste), and I'm guessing if a person followed the link it would even go to some kind of porn or malware or something nefarious.  GRRRR!

Over the past few months I had this happen occasionally, and found them because I get an email with the comment. So I would go to that post and delete the comment.  But this past week it's multiple ones EVERY SINGLE night!  So I've changed the settings on my blog so that comments on posts older than 7 days will wait for moderation. Then I can delete them as a group.  I'm hoping that will slow down these weird comments.  And the "name" of the person/entity making the comment is obviously a play on my email domain name.  So frustrating!!!

Now if Blogger would just find a way for us to block specific followers, I would be even happier.  OK - my rant is over for today.

I certainly feel your pain re: the unwanted followers. I've had a few spam comments, but do have mine set like you do now. It is so aggravating!

Hi Sara --

Two suggestions for you that will definitely help. Go into Blogger and change your settings to no longer allow Anonymous comments (https://www.peggyktc.com/2017/05/control-who-can-comment-on-blogger-blog.html) and you can also turn off the comments on posts at any point (say after a month go into the old post and change the settings to "keep old comments, don't allow new comments"). Hope this helps.

You can also set "comment moderation" for posts any specified number of days. (I chose 7 days.)....But I agree, it is annoying.

I changed my comment moderation to 2 days because I was getting so many bogus comments. It seems to have helped.

so annoying . . numerous novel ways that hackers can access our data now. I hope the suggestions by other bloggers here work for you!

I had both my blogs set to block comments on posts older than two days/maybe three I cannot remember which. You would not believe the hate filled comments I have been getting over this Corona virus thing...if you didn't get them that was at least a blessing. I was getting them every single day on both blogs. I set them to moderate all comments for a while, then opened back up till all comments on new posts would post. In just a couple days started getting the hate filled comments...now, I put my photo blog back on moderate all comments, but since I don't post every day on the other post, I just left it to moderate comments on posts older than two days.

I changed to the no comments from anonymous commenters but it blocked some of my regular people...they don't have google blogs. So think about that carefully if you decide to do it.
